IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE IN LAW – HIGHWAY CODE

SPEED LIMITS ON DIFFERENT ROADS AND FOR DIFFERENT VEHICLES

Speed Limits: This can be described as the pace of a moving vehicle at a given time frame, according to laid down traffic laws. It is a maximum legal speed a driver can travel on a road under ideal conditions.

Speed limits differ in application, depending on the types of roads, vehicles and the environment. These speed limits require the driver to adhere strictly to the speed indicated because of the condition of the road, and the nature of the place.

Speed Limits for Different Vehicles:

1. Different vehicles are required by law to keep within specified speed limits.

2. For example, in Nigeria the law imposes maximum limit of 100 Km/hr for cars on any highway in Nigeria.

3. Taxis and Buses are expected to maintain 50Km/hr within built up areas like streets in towns, villages and cities.

Articulated vehicles like tankers and trailers re expected to maintain a maximum speed limit of 50Km/hr on highways and 60Km/hr on expressways respectively as shown below:

SPEED LIMITS FOR VEHICLES IN km/hr

TYPES OF VEHICLES BUILD-UP HIGHWAY EXPRESSWAY
MOTORCYCLES 50 50
PRIVATE CARDS 50 80 100
TAXIS & BUSES 50 80 90
TANKERS & TRAILERS 45 50 60
TOW VEHICLE (WHILE TOWING) 45 45 45
TOW VEHICLE (WHILE NOT TOWING) 50 60 70

Common sense often dictates lower speed limits. Common sense speed should be lower when the weather is bad or the roads are defective.

Speed monitors are installed in some vehicles to regulate speed and some roads are specially built with speed cameras to make or force motorists to drive at a required speed limit.

Ignorance is no excuse in law.
Obey speed regulations and avoid conviction.
Install a speed limiting device today to keep within speed limits.

Speed Limit Device: FRSC boss orders officers to prepare for enforcement

Advantages of a speed limiter

Speed limiters have several potential safety benefits. They reduce the top speed of vehicles to a pre-set limit. Although this may reduce overall crash risk it is more likely to lessen the severity of a crash. Speed limiters also reduce speed variability, thereby reducing lane change and deceleration maneuvers. Speed limiters have also shown to reduce approach speeds at intersections, curves and roundabouts.

However, there are also potential benefits beyond safety. Higher speeds are less fuel -efficient. Speed limiters have been shown to be fuel-efficient and could lead to substantial fuel savings. Less fuel consumption means a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and longer tyre life. Speed limiters can produce 10% to 15% overall cost reduction when limiting speeds to about 60 mph, with most of the savings coming from fuel, tyres and maintenance.

SECURING THE FUTURE OF FLEET OPERATION

Excessive speed in driving heavy vehicles has been a social and governmental issue around the world for many years, primarily from the perspective of road safety.

One effective solution to prevent speeding in commercial vehicles is to equip them with a road speed limiter system, which restricts maximum vehicle speed to the required speed limit without loss of engine power. This is realized by limiting the required fuel demand according to a set speed limit. The maximum speed limit is set using an electronic control unit. Information about the current speed of the vehicle is measured with a speed sensor that supplies an electronic speed signal to the control unit. The control unit limits the fuel output in different ways, depending on the fuel injection technology of the engine.

Two different engine technologies used in vehicles require different speed limiter device applications.

1. Mechanically controlled engines

Engine revs are regulated with a mechanical throttle pedal, which transmits the pedal position mechanically via a throttle cable or rod to the injection pump (or throttle body). The fuel demand on the injection pump is adjusted via a mechanical injection pump lever or a mechanical throttle plate. To realize a speed limiting system on a mechanically controlled engine, an electromechanical speed limiter is used to decouple the driver’s demand from the injection pump in order to limit the maximum speed. In this application, the vehicle must be equipped with a separate speed limiter system.

2. Electronically controlled engines

Engine revs are regulated with a mechanical throttle pedal which converts the mechanical pedal position to an electrical signal, and transmits it via an electrical wire to an electronic control unit. The control unit regulates the fuel demand via electronic injection such as electronic diesel control (EDC), a pump line nozzle system (PLD) or common rail direct injection (CDI). In this application, the speed limiter function could be one of numerous functions managed by the engine’s or vehicle’s electronic control unit.

The FRSC will begin the enforcement of the use of speed limiter for commercial vehicles on Nigerian roads from the 1st of April, 2016.

All vehicles owners, fleet operators, ministries, departments and agencies especially commercial vehicle operators are hereby enjoined to align with this life-saving initiative by ensuring the installation of speed limiters on their vehicles to curb the wanton carnage on our roads and to avoid arrest and resulting sanctions.
